unit 18 hunt   Controlled Hunt - Unit 18

Terry had a Controlled Hunt Tag - Mule Deer - Unit 18.  I felt somewhat obligated to help him fill it, since he applied for the tag somewhat in collaboration with - or at least in the excitement of - my applying for a Mountain Goat tag in the Seven Devils.

He also helped me pack out my goat ... it was `the least I could do'.  ...here ...

A Perfect Hunt ...

The Seven Devils Mountains / Hells Canyon Wilderness–National Recreation Area on the Idaho–Oregon border contains the deepest canyon in North American.  The Snake River cuts through its bottom at an elevation of 1400 ft above sea level. Less than 6 miles away, He Devil peak soars at 9400 ft, ... 8000 ft higher.  The Idaho Fish and Game Department has a controlled hunt draw for four or five  permits each year for Mountain Goat on the Idaho Side.

In 2003 I drew ... here

Albion Geese 1, NYD 2003

We did as we had done previously, this time with Jesse and I taking the state line, Jared going past the couple houses into Idaho, and this time Terry pushing the pond.  There were a lot of ducks flying, but not many geese.  One group came out over Jesse, in 'the Corner'; he got a couple shots off, but nothing came down.  I got off a couple shots at some high mallards, but nothing came down.

Jesse said he had a spot ... Continued

One Shot Candace

Terry’s protocol is to be at road’s end at daybreak – and hunt to points beyond.  Perhaps from years of duck hunting over decoys – my protocol is to get where you want to be, before daybreak.  So when I said I wanted to be in place, in a covert canyon some one and a half miles in, before daybreak – Terry volunteered to meet me in there `as the morning progressed’ – he would come in from on top with Amy and Justin.

So Candace and I left Moscow about 4:30 am.  The moon had set by the time we left the vehicle at the Park, so we navigated by starlight and, at least for a while, by the light from the trailer park upstream.  Once our eyes adjusted to the gentle glow of the stars, we could do fine – except, as I was reminded, twice, for fences … the second fence (the first one on the climb) coming unexpectedly soon, and cutting my chin.  I was familiar with the route – it was the Power Climb, which I had taken my kids on (and some friends), … Continued
